Ground Source Heat Pumps

Utilising the grounds temperature which stays at around 18c and delivering that energy through a ground source heat pump system to increase the efficiency of your energy using through natural green technologies. A ground source heat pump increases the temperature from the ground by between 1.5 and 4 times – so if the ground temperature is 12°C, the output would be between 18 and 48°C).

At drakes we can specify, supply and install a ground source heat pump system to harnesses heat from under the ground by pumping water through it. Drakes will correctly size the heat pump that will increase the temperature, and the heat is used to provide heating or hot water.

The pump needs electricity to run, but will use less energy to produce the energy it produces using ambient heat from the ground rather than burning fuel to generate heat.

Drakes will co-ordinate the complete ground source heat pump system that is made up of a ground loop (a network of water pipes buried underground) and a heat pump at ground level. Sufficient space is required for installation of the system and all the appropriate ground works will be undertaken by drakes to ensure the smooth operation from inception to hand over

How a ground source heat pump works
A mixture of water and anti-freeze is pumped around the ground loop and absorbs the naturally occurring heat stored in the ground. The process is similar to that used to cool a fridge, but in reverse. The pump itself consists of an evaporator, a compressor and a condenser - together this take the heat from the water mixture, transfer it to your domestic heating system and increases the temperature in the process. This heat can then be used in a radiator, hot water or in an underfloor heating system. Whether you'll need an additional back-up heating system will depend on the individual home.
